about Thai massage

Therapeutic Thai Massage is a traditional form of bodywork that forms part of Thai medicine. I work on the body using various techniques; hands, feet, elbows, scarves, spoons, heated herbal compresses and Tok Sên can be used to release tension and stagnation in the skin, soft tissue, joints and bones, and around the organs, restoring harmony, balance, and flow.

Each session includes a consultation so that treatment is appropriate and effective. Depending on what you need personally, and in response to your constitutional element, treatment may be deeply relaxing or energising and revitalising. Traditionally, a Thai massage treatment lasts two hours so that you can deeply relax into it, but one hour and 90-minute sessions are also available.

Tok Sên

Tok Sên (hammer energy lines) is a traditional northern Thai massage technique which uses the vibration created by gently tapping a tamarind mallet on differently shaped wooden hammers onto the body to release muscle tension and relieve pain. It also improves circulation, promotes healing and energetic balance as well as being deeply relaxing and meditative.

Tok Sên also stimulates the ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) which releases dopamine, oxytocin and endorphins, as well as improving function in parts of the brain involved in social cognition, self awareness and satisfaction.

It feels really good on tight tissue, stressed bodies and minds. Traditionally in Thailand, this is spirit medicine, used to cleanse the body of ‘spirits’ causing stagnation in the body. In modern scientific terms, we know that vibration is effective at dispersing bound up muscle and connective tissue – think tight calves after running, tense shoulders etc.

I use Tok Sên in combination with other traditional, therapeutic Thai massage techniques to create bespoke treatments that respond to each individual’s needs.

As part of massage sessions, I use steamed herbal compresses to prepare your body for deeper, more subtle work, stretches and compressions.

Anti-inflammatory: Turmeric contains the bioactive curcumin, which has strong anti-inflammatory properties. When massaged with herbal compresses, the curcumin can help reduce muscle and joint inflammation and relieve pain. Zingiber cassumunar (Thai Phlai) contains bioactive compounds which can help reduce inflammation, muscle and joint pain.

Muscle relaxation: The heat allows the ingredients to penetrate the skin and help loosen and relax tight muscles. Camphor has cooling, analgesic and soothing properties which can have a positive effect on muscles.

Stress relief: The eucalyptus scent can have a calming effect and contribute to relaxation and promote general well-being

Skin care: Turmeric, galanga and camphor, also have potential benefits for skin health. Lemongrass and Kaffir lime leaves are used to soothe skin irritations and calm the skin.

Energy and circulation: Massaging with herbal compresses can promote circulation and have a stimulating effect on the body, increasing energy and vitality. Tamarind leaves are said to have both soothing and revitalising properties.

pregnancy massage

I have been holistically supporting folk through pregnancy since 2006. Your massage will evolve as you grow yourself and your baby, to support and meet you where you are. We can look to relax and release physical tension as well as working with emotional aspects that you may experience such as anxiety or fear. Whether this is your first or subsequent pregnancy, I have helped thousands of folk to feel more grounded, relaxed and confident. If you have previously experienced a challenging or traumatic birth we can also work to meet what comes up for you. In your treatment, we can also discuss and practise gentle movement, breath and meditation techniques if you wish to.

post-natal massage

Restorative post-natal massage is gentle, effective and healing, from 3 weeks to months or even years after birth. Restorative post-natal massage can help to soothe your nervous system, address any physical or emotional issues arising from pregnancy and birth, as well as stimulating healing within your body. Alongside herbal compresses and other soothing massage techniques, I also use traditional Thai scarf work to help bring the pelvic bones back into alignment, which can help to alleviate back and abdominal issues.
Each treatment will be based on personal consultation so that it meets you where you are. I can also incorporate meditation, breath and movement that you can practise at home if you wish. You are welcome to come for restorative massage with your baby and/or a supportive other to hold the baby if you don’t feel to leave them.
I also offer scar-tissue massage, either as part of your massage or as a separate treatment. Whether your c-section scar is recent (I can start to gently treat from 3 weeks post birth) to help avoid scar tissue build up, or on much older scars to release tension and referred pain as well as restore sensation, confidence and movement.

scar tissue therapy

Whether you have c-section, mastectomy, top-surgery or other scars that you would like to work with, this is deeply healing work. We all know from experience that the visible scar is just the tip of the iceberg, both physically and emotionally.
You might have: corded or knotted, toughened and desensitised tissue that causes pulling and refered pain in your back, hips, shoulders etc because the whole body is connected, and post-surgery reconstruction gathers and pulls on surrounding areas. It may effect more deeply on the mobility of your organs. And emotionally, there may be trauma around the surgery itself that creates patterns of holding, leading to pain or dissociation. Scar tissue therapy is gentle, slow and respectful, working at a pace that allows you to feel agency. It is deeply effective at sensitively shifting the scar tissue, to improve texture and sensation as well as profoundly healing. I can work appropriately with you on your scar directly post-surgery to help healing from 3 weeks post-surgery to very old scars that hold stories.
